When scrolling through the Donatienne Handbags lookbook for 2012, one cannot help but notice the obvious influence that California has on designer Nikki Erwin. From brilliant orange, neon pink to classic black, every handbag exudes the cool, easy Los Angeles spirit that is emulated on both the runway and boardwalk. Crafted by hand in Los Angeles, every single bag is charming, unique, yet totally practical. Every stud, fringe, and piece of hardware is perfectly placed to create a bag that embodies true California chic. Nikki was gracious enough to give Handbago.com the scoop on her favorite bags, trends, and inspirations. She also sent us pictures of her amazing handbags, workspace, and personal closet!

Of all the accessories to design, why did you choose handbags as your main focus?
In my eyes, a handbag is the ultimate accessory. For the days that I feel like throwing on a pair of flip flops and a t-shirt, I completely rely on my bag to add that something special to spruce up my look. Whether it's the shape, texture or color of the bag, often times it makes my outfit. Our whole lives are in our bags. I couldn't make it farther than my front door without my purse!
Who do you see as your main demographic?
I don't have a demographic in mind when I create my handbags. I make my bags in hopes that anyone and everyone can find something that could complete their collection or look. I love to see girls like myself who showcase a similar style rocking one of my bags. What makes me even more thrilled, though, is to see a woman like my mother, who isn't usually as wild or loud in her fashion, wearing a bright orange bag.

Out of all the trends this season, which is your most favorite? Your least favorite?
I'm so excited that there is a color blocking trend going on these days. Although I have been known to wear all black before, I live for color. I'm into the hipster throw back style that is big right now, however, I am a firm believer that you can be "too hip".
Where do you find your inspiration? Anything unexpected?
I find a lot of inspiration from other fashion. I spend hours looking at fashion blogs, pulling photos and collaging. It's fun for me to see people out in the world and imagine what could really top off their outfit. Living in Los Angeles I feel like I'm one big sponge, too. There are so many trends and walks of life in this town, there are endless opportunities for inspiration. My friends also have a lot of input in my designs.. It's fun for me to listen to them, and list exactly what they are looking for and then put my own spin on what would work for them.

Which Donatienne bag is best for day to day wear? How about for a girl's night out?
For day to day use, I love my Jordie bags. You can fit a lot in it, throw it over your shoulder and go. You can stay safe with black or spice up your outfit with some color. To me Jordie bags are super stylish, and they bring the most practicality to your fashion. It makes carrying all of your stuff around as low maintenance as possible, while still looking cute.
As for a girls night out, I always bring my Camille bag. It's the prefect size and is nice enough for almost any occasion without being a formal bag. I also love that I get a sneak peek of my reflection in the front hardware to make sure I'm still looking on point!
And last but not least, choose three words that describe the Donatienne line!
1. Rad
2. Fun
3. Easy
