Is there a modern and chic way to incorporate the 80’s trends without looking like a fashion victim?

Dear Kelly,
When I think of the 80’s, I think of hideous fashion: neon colors, fishnet stockings, exercise clothing, and lightning bolt earrings!  I’ve resisted the trend so far, but this 80’s thing doesn’t seem to be going away.  Is there a way to incorporate some of these trends without looking like a fashion victim?  And are there any designers who interpreted the 80’s in a fresh and sophisticated way?
Sincerely,
Not Wanting to be Pretty in Pink

Dear NWTBPIP,
I agree, the 80’s had some real fashion lows, but the good news is it looks like (most of us) have learned from our mistakes.  After seeing the fall collections, it seems that designers like Marc Jacobs and Gucci really took the best elements of the 80’s and put a fresh spin on them.

Marc Jacobs went wild with shiny satin (sometimes printed) bags or bright pink cut-leather clutches paired with acid-washed jeans and angular shoulders.  Gucci showed gorgeous luxe metallic-leather shoulder bags with glam night-time looks that can only be described as “hard glam.”  Absolutely delicious, if you ask me!

Jimmy Choo also has some bags that fit right into this trend, and while the one I’m showing here is over the top, it’s a lot of fun, yet still tasteful with a chic edge.  And if you have the right outfit (please not animal print, see my previous post about being matchy-matchy!), this mixed-materials zebra and snake bag will be the envy of anyone daring enough to pull it off.

Alexander McQueen’s collection didn’t look very 80’s, however, his houndstooth bag really reminds me of those Smiths-loving London girls from the mid 80’s.  Coolness beyond belief.

I hate to end on a bad note, but please remember to choose bags that are not gimmicky and cheap looking.  I usually don’t pick on a particular designer, but I just feel that poor Pauric Sweeney has gotten this 80’s trend all wrong.  These styles are just copies of all the bad things that happened in the 80’s.  They look cheap and silly.  And with their $1000 plus price tags, you will certainly be more than just a victim of fashion.

Lastly, remember that if these bags are out of your price range, just keep them in mind while shopping at the more economic stores.  Designers at all price-points are on top of these trends and if you keep an eye out, you’ll find something with a similar look that will complement your new fall looks.

Be confident,
Kelly
